About Me
- Name: Horace Jeffery Hodges
- Location: Seoul, South Korea
I am a retired professor. I last taught at Ewha Womans University, mostly composition, research writing, and cultural issues, but also the occasional graduate seminar on Gnosticism and Johannine theology and the occasional undergraduate course on European history. My doctorate is in history (U.C. Berkeley), with emphasis on religion and science. My thesis is on John's gospel and Gnosticism. I'm also an award-winning writer, and I recommend my novella, The Bottomless Bottle of Beer, to anyone interested. I'm originally from the Arkansas Ozarks, but my academic career -- funded through doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships (e.g., Fulbright, Naumann, Lady Davis) -- has taken me through Texas, California, Switzerland, Germany, Australia, and Israel and has landed me in Seoul, South Korea. I've also traveled to Mexico, visited much of Europe, including Moscow, and touched down briefly in a few East Asian countries. Hence: "Gypsy Scholar."

Quite intense. The lead singer's style reminds me a little of Eddie Vedder's.

Type "Eddie Vedder" into YouTube's search window, and you'll find plenty of samples of his voice. He was (is?) the lead singer of Pearl Jam, one of the original 90s "grunge" bands. Actually, a good sample of his vocal work might be this one. A touching song comes from the work Vedder did for the movie "Into the Wild." That second song is quieter, softer, and more meditative. I reviewed "Into the Wild" over at my first walk blog.

The singer "disturbed" me so I closed my eyes the first time through, then watched the entire video. Surprisingly, some of the images I imagined were very comparable to what was in the video. I may like this version better simply because there is a rage for what he sees and feels. S&G's version now almost sounds like a meek acceptance for the world.
Yes, I had much the same reaction. The lyrics are rather dark, so David Draiman's interpretation seems to fit the song better.
(As for the lyrics, there's a certain ambiguity about the sign: it presents the truth, but is falsely worshiped as a god.)
