Or was that fox female?


There is a third possible rendering: The fox could be female:
Vixenation 3
One day, a fox ran through his town.
He did not wish to let her down,
so he gave chase and ran along
beside that russet one too long.

He found himself in forest deep,
and so, he lay him down to sleep,
exhausted, on the forest floor,
and there he sleeps forevermore.
Maybe that's got it: The word "vixen" is used of female foxes, and the title, "Vixenation," therefore better fits the poem after specifying the fox as "her."

I've also added a couple of arguably necessary commas . . .
