The Gypsy packs up for another university...
I hadn't previously mentioned this place by name so as not to jinx my chances, but I can now state that I'm heading to Kyung Hee University for a new position on a two-year renewable contract in the English Department. In fact, I'm to go in this afternoon to sign that contract.
I'll be teaching mainly composition and reading but perhaps an occasional literature-oriented course of my own design ... a possibility hinted at in my interview some weeks ago. We'll see how that turns out.
I'm pretty sure that I won't be teaching much Medieval literature or Western history, unlike at Korea University, but otherwise, the positions are comparable, and I'm quite happy with how things have turned out.
For those longtimers who recall earlier expats teaching here in Korea, you'll know to whom I refer when I note that I'm assuming the position that Kevin O'Rourke held. O'Rourke is the fellow who used to write a poetry column for the Korea Herald, "A Poem for Breakfast," which provided a short daily shijo poem translated from Korean. I used to read it my first time in Korea, way back in 1995-96. I think that it was still appearing when I returned in late 1999.
I won't be publishing any poetry columns, however, and the only Korean-to-English translating that I'll be doing is with my wife, who currently has a grant-supported project translating a prominent, contemporary Korean writer ... but enough on that.

Congratulations on the new job!
Not knowing any Korean geography, I will ask what may be a dumb question -- will this mean moving your home? (And, therefore, a gap in your daily blog?)
Thanks, CIV.
As for geography, no, we won't be moving for this new job, but we will be moving in April to a new apartment near where we currently live.
I expect no interruption since I can always blog from a pc-bang (computer room) until the internet link is set up in the new place, and that doesn't take long (because my wife doesn't let the internet provider take long).

I have many fond memories of walking up to Kyunghee University after evening classes.
Good luck with the new job.
Good to hear about your new gig. Congratulations!
Kangmi, thanks for the well wishes. I wish you well in your own endeavors ... literary, it seems (screenplays?).

Huzzah!
Thanks, Scott. I've long wanted a huzzah. I think that I first learned of huzzahs when I read War and Peace so many years ago, and now, I have a huzzah of my own.

Thats great, Jeffery. Best of luck with the new department!
Congrats!
Congratulations. I have spent a lot of time on the campus of Kyunghee as a teen-ager in the '70s. Not for any studious endeavor. It used to have a lot of nicely wooded areas where a bunch of us liked to play hide and seek after dark and... there might have been some other bits of mischief. The official story is that I don't remember.
Congratulations on the new job! Best of luck in your new academic home.
HR, thanks for the good-luck wishes.

Good luck with the new position Doc.
Hi Jeffery!
Well, congrats on your new position. For some reason, I had thought you would show up in North America for some reason, but I guess it's much better for your wife if you remain in Korea. By the way, my students at Korea U tell me that Kyunghee is a more beautiful campus! I hope you enjoy it there.
Jeff, Congratulations and best wishes for success at your new university and position.
We're doing OK here. Ann is slowly regaining her strength. Her immune system will remains somewhat depressed for about one year. She sends her best wishes as well.
Hoping that all is well with Sun-Ae and the children.
Love,
Pat
