Might not his enemies know him just as well or even better?
A good point, hence the other proverb, "Keep your friends close and your enemies closer."
But I'm intentionally misreading, anyway, since the proverb "A man is known by his friends" is a variant on "A man is known by the company he keeps."

Yes, and you are right, I think, though I'd need to reflect on what is meant by "knowing" somebody.
