Moby Dick
An online friend asked me for a list of top-ten books to read, even though he's probably more erudite than I am!
Anyway, leaving aside my own masterpiece, I suppose I'd first recommend Melville's Moby Dick. A many-faceted work, it requires reading and re-reading for ever greater understanding, but each re-reading is a pleasure, as one dives ever deeper into the meaning and the madness of finite man on an infinite quest.

I claim no erudition where literary criticism is concerned. Moreover, you have enumerated one of the famous classics that I have not read. Most of the books I have read were nonfiction. That is why I asked for a list of novels that you might recommend, since now that I am retired, I have more time to read fiction.
Okay. Let me know if you like it. There are slow passages where little seems to be happening - and one could become bored - but such passages actually should receive special attention.

I read books constantly...one of my many faults. And since my two TIA's (mini strokes in 2013 & 2014) I now have an added blessing. I can read a book, forget what I've read, and read it again with great pleasure...(Or that is what Linda Gay tells me)...
