New Year's Haiku

2010

A first cold nightfall.
Already the infant lacks
A little warm coat.

  1. Even afer three years in teh cold at this time of year, for me New Year's is a day of sun, beach and warmth.
    Wonderful image evoked...thanks!
May you and yours never lack for a warm coat.

  2. Back in the Arkansas Ozarks, New Year's Eve was usually one of the coldest nights, so I often wondered about that poor little baby New Year coming naked into the world, but perhaps he didn't hang around long in the colder climes.

Thanks for the well-wishes . . . and the same to you and yours.

  4. Thanks, Charles, and I suppose you realize that "doom" is merely "mood" spelled backwards. Or is it the other way around?

Either way, same to you and yours.

  5. Incidentally, I modeled 'my' haiku after a Bashō classic:

    初しぐれ 猿も小蓑を ほしげ也

hatsu shigure saru mo komino wo hoshige nari

    the first cold shower
even the monkey seems to want
    a little coat of straw

Just go to Wikipedia and check under "Haiku" for the example and more information.

I have been reading poetry since 1973, and this is one of the poignant poems I have ever read. As soon as I read it, all I could say in reaction was, "Oh my dear God."
    Thank you for posting. 9Janxciv
