Winged Worms?

The only winged worms I know of are dragons.

Glowworms, Glowworms

We called them "lightning bugs," special creatures.
"Fireflies," said the outsiders instead.
"Glowworms," said some mad kids, as if features
like "glow" hid secret truths within each head.

And we've yet to solve the problem of how
these worms take leave of earth and take to air.
Let's leave it as a mystery, for now,
as though there were no emptiness still there.

Maybe the answer is dragons . . .

I was mean to fireflies when I was a teen. A friend and I would patrol my back yard on a hot July evening, badminton racquets in hand, two adolescents on summer break with nothing better to do.

Whenever a firefly was stupid enough to emit its signal, we'd converge on its position, and one of us would swat it brutally out of the air. Each swing was a guess: the yard would be perfectly dark by the time we reached the firefly's position. But fireflies are leisurely creatures; they move so slowly that they seem almost to be hovering, so it was easy to guess where the insect was. Nine times out of ten, we'd swing and hit, and the result was the firefly's final signal: a neon-bright shower of wet, glowing sparks as the bug was shredded by our racquets.

I'm not proud of what I did, but damn, was it entertaining.

It still would be greatly entertaining, I fear.

Don't forget what Coleridge said:

Farewell, farewell! but this I tell
To thee, thou Wedding-Guest!
He prayeth well, who loveth well
Both man and bird and beast.

He prayeth best, who loveth best
All things both great and small;
For the dear God who loveth us,
He made and loveth all.

Imagine having to wear a dead lighting bug around your neck? Ah-ha! Well then...

But didn't the Lord say, "I saw Satan fall like a lightning bug from heaven"?
